Swordsman are in no way weaker than Mages unless you are going for sheer AoE or penetrating power if you give them a solid minute or two to synthesize together enough mana. Paul is not only more experienced than Rudeus through his years of real combat as an adventurer, he's advanced rank in sword god style, water god style, and north god style which focus on ultra-fast one-hit kills, perfect defense/parry, and adaptability/trickery respectively. Also swordsmen in this series use something akin to Haki called Touki wherein they surround their body in invisible mana/aura which enhances their abilities and defense.
